GOVERNMENT OF CANADA COMMITS $424,468 TO QUEEN’S UNVIVERSITY THROUGH NEW RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING

KINGSTON, March 11, 2005 — The Honourable Peter Milliken, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, joined the Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry, in congratulating researchers at Queen’s University on receiving $424, 468 to undertake three world-class research projects.

This funding was provided through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI)
New Opportunities Fund (NOF) and Infrastructure Operating Fund (IOF), which provide infrastructure support to newly recruited academic staff.

“Knowledge, research and innovation are at the heart of our country’s prosperity,” said Minister Emerson. “Through our ability to attract research talent to our world-class institutions, Canada is establishing its position at the forefront of the global economy.”

Today’s announcement of additional research funding for academic researchers at Queen’s University is significant because it will assist them to carry on with their important work to help grow and enhance Canada’s reputation as leading-edge country in the global,
knowledge-based economy,” said Peter Milliken. “With this increase in support to our research community, we are now better able to maintain and recruit the very best of talent as we strive to build on our proud record of achievement and academic excellence.”

The NOF enables eligible universities to provide infrastructure to newly recruited faculty members, in their first full-time academic appointment in Canadian degree-granting institutions. The fund also enables institutions to recruit new faculty members in the areas of research identified as priorities in their strategic research plans. The IOF supplements the NOF by assisting universities with the incremental operating and maintenance costs associated with new infrastructure projects.

The CFI continues to attract and retain outstanding faculty members so that Canada’s universities will be able to address diverse needs related to faculty renewal. Providing our researchers with the necessary infrastructure they need to continue to be innovative and creative is an important investment in the future of Canada and will serve us well in building a 21st century economy.

The CFI is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI’s mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and other non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians.
