$424,468 TO QUEEN’S UNVIVERSITY THROUGH NEW RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING
KINGSTON, March 11, 2005
— The Honourable Peter Milliken, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the
Islands, joined the Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry, in
congratulating researchers at Queen’s University
on receiving $424, 468 to undertake three world-class research projects. This funding was provided through the Canada
Foundation for Innovation (CFI) “Knowledge,
research and innovation are at the heart of our country’s prosperity,”
said Minister Emerson. “Through our ability to attract research talent to our
world-class institutions, Canada is establishing its position at the forefront of the global
economy.” “Today’s
announcement of additional research funding for academic researchers at
Queen’s University is significant because it will assist them to carry on
with their important work to help grow and enhance Canada’s reputation as
leading-edge country in the global, The NOF enables eligible universities to provide
infrastructure to newly recruited faculty members, in their first full-time
academic appointment in Canadian degree-granting institutions. The fund also
enables institutions to recruit new faculty members in the areas of research
identified as priorities in their strategic research plans. The IOF
supplements the NOF by assisting universities with the incremental operating
and maintenance costs associated with new infrastructure projects. The CFI continues to attract and retain outstanding
faculty members so that Canada’s universities will be able to address
diverse needs related to faculty renewal. Providing our researchers with the
necessary infrastructure they need to continue to be innovative and creative
is an important investment in the future of Canada and will serve us well in
building a 21st century economy. The CFI is an independent corporation created
by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI’s
mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges,
research hospitals, and other non-profit research institutions to carry out
