CRIME PREVENTION PROJECT IN KINGSTON AWARDED FUNDING UNDER THE NATIONAL CRIME PREVENTION STRATEGY

KINGSTON, March 5, 2004—The Honourable Peter Milliken, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, welcomed the announcement that the Government of Canada has awarded $43,135 to Frontenac Community Mental Health Services and $49,900 to the Social Planning Council of Kingston and Area under the National Crime Prevention Strategy.

“Community-based crime prevention initiatives like these ones are the key to ensuring safety in Canadian homes and streets,” said Mr. Milliken. “These initiatives show how members of the community in Kingston can work together to make a difference in the fight against crime.”

“The best way to reduce crime is to prevent it in the first place,” noted Mr. Milliken. “I am pleased that the Government of Canada is supporting the efforts of these groups to help build a safer community. Their efforts will, in turn, benefit all Canadians.”

The projects receiving these funds are the Crime Prevention Partnership Program through Frontenac Community Mental Health Services and the Kingston Youth Services Capacity Building Project through the Social Planning Council of Kingston and Area.

“The real experts on crime prevention in any community are the people who are part of that community. The projects introduced today are about community members developing crime prevention solutions that meet their unique needs,” concluded Mr. Milliken.

The National Strategy takes an early-intervention approach to prevention and community safety through the support of grass-roots responses that deal with the underlying causes of crime and victimization; things such as family violence, school problems and substance abuse. It supports community organizations with financial support, as well as tools, knowledge, and expertise on effective crime prevention activities.

Launched in 1998, building on the strengths of partnerships to support over 3,800 projects nationwide, the National Crime Prevention Strategy has made a real difference in the lives of Canadians.
