Government of Canada provides employment services to Kingston residents

KINGSTON, ONTARIOThe Honourable Peter Milliken, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, today welcomed the announcement from the Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada of $206,026 in funding to provide employment services to unemployed former inmates and their families in the Kingston area.

“These services will help unemployed citizens in the Kingston area join the work force,” said Mr. Milliken. “As well, this initiative will help job seekers find and keep work, and contribute to the area’s economy.”

The John Howard Society of Kingston and District’s employment resource centre and employment counselling services are funded through Employment Assistance Services. This support measure of the Employment Insurance Act helps unemployed individuals prepare for, obtain and maintain employment, by providing counselling, job search techniques, job placement and labour market information.

Kingston is unique in Canada because of the proximity of eight federal correctional facilities. The families and friends of inmates often follow them to Kingston, and require the services of an employment agency.
Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
This project has been reviewed to ensure compliance with the Department’s administration of its grant and contribution programs.
