PETER MILLIKEN WELCOMES ANNOUNCEMENT OF EIGHT NEW PUBLIC INTERNET ACCESS CENTRES FOR KINGSTON

The Honourable Peter Milliken, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, today welcomed the announcement by the Honourable Brian Tobin, Minister of Industry, launching eight new public Internet access centres in Kingston, Ontario. Industry Canada' s Community Access Program has contributed $100,000 towards these centres.

"These community access centres will provide area residents with affordable, convenient access to the Internet, said Mr. Milliken "These centres are an excellent model of community based organizations, the private sector and all levels of government working together to harness the enabling power of the Information Highway and spark Canadian innovation."

The Community Access Program, part of the Government of Canada's Connecting Canadians strategy, is aimed at keeping Canada among world leaders in Internet access and applications. The program is establishing public Internet access centres in remote, rural and urban communities nationwide. Since 1995, over 3,100 access centres have been approved or established in Ontario, representing a Government of Canada investment of close to $49 million. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 budget and is therefore built into the existing financial framework.
