New Construction Contract Awarded at C.F.B Kingston (Kingston ON,March 10, 2000) - Peter Milliken, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, today participated in a ceremony, on behalf of The Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Art Eggleton, to announce the award of two construction contracts at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Kingston. Herve Pomerleau Inc. of Longueuil, Quebec, has been awarded a contract for $12.2M to construct a field house and swimming pool, and McNeill Contracting of Kingston, Ontario, has been awarded a contract for $1.8M to expand and upgrade a community centre complex at the base. "I congratulate Herve Pomerleau Inc. and McNeill Contracting on having won these important competitive contracts," said Mr. Milliken. "The jobs created through these projects will contribute to Kingston's economic development." The field house and swimming pool will be constructed at the Kingston Military Community Sports Complex. It serves the university level athletics program of the Royal Military College of Canada and the military physical fitness training program of CFB Kingston. The Complex also provides recreation for the broader military community, including CF members and families. Construction work on the pool and field house will begin in April and is scheduled for completion in February 2001. About 195 new jobs will be created during the life of the project. Work on the community centre will include a new water park, family resource centre and storage facilities, and renovations to bring handicap access and building systems up to code. Construction began in February and is scheduled for completion in August 2000. About 30 new jobs will be created during the life of that project. "These new facilities will better meet the needs of military personnel and their families," said Minister Eggleton. "They demonstrate the Department's commitment to the quality of life of our military members." Half of the funding for these projects was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework. The other half is drawn from funds provided by the CF Personnel Support Agency through the PSP Recapitalization Program, a co-operative venture among several CF organizations designed to improve facilities for CF members and their families. Projects being carried out under the program range from renovations of existing buildings such as gymnasia and arenas, to the construction of new community centres, pools and sports complexes. The projects announced today are an example of how the government is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars.
