Contract awarded to build new dormitory at RMC Kingston, Ontario, March 10, 2000 - Peter Milliken, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, on behalf of the Honourable Art Eggleton, Minister of National Defence, announced today the award of a $10.4 million contract to Doran Contractors Ltd. of Ottawa to design and build a new dormitory at the Royal Military College of Canada. "The new dormitory will provide excellent living and study conditions for developing young officers," said Mr. Milliken. "This project is another example of how the Department is keeping a military presence in this region." The new four-story dormitory will house 200 students on the shores of Lake Ontario, west of the Fort LaSalle dormitory. The dormitory will include bed/study rooms, washrooms, laundry and storage facilities, as well as lounge areas. "Facilities like these are essential to sustaining an effective learning environment, " said Minister Eggleton. "This contract demonstrates the Department's commitment to the quality of life of our military members." Construction will begin in March, with completion scheduled for December 2000. About 195 jobs will be created as a result of this project. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework. This initiative is an example of how the government is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars.
