ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes

ecoENERGY Retrofit for Homes provides home and property owners with grants of up to $5,000 to offset the cost of making energy-efficiency improvements.  ecoENERGY Retrofit grants apply to a host of measures that reduce energy consumption and provide for a cleaner environment, from increasing insulation to upgrading a furnace.

Only homes that have undergone a residential energy efficiency assessment by an energy advisor certified by Natural Resources Canada will be eligible for grants.  Energy advisors serving the K7K and K7L postal code areas are:

Detached homes, row housing, duplexes, triplexes and mobile homes on permanent foundations and some small apartment buildings of three storeys or less may qualify for ecoENERGY Retrofit for Homes grants.

The ecoENERGY Retrofit grant is based on the type and number of energy improvements that have been made, and how much the efficiency of the home has been improved. The grant is based on how effective that upgrade is in saving energy, not on the cost of the upgrade.

The maximum grant one can receive per home or multi-unit residential building is $5,000, whereas the total grant amount available to one individual or entity for eligible properties over the life of the program is $500,000.  The average grant is expected to be more than $1,000 and will yield an average 25 percent reduction in energy use and costs.

Energy Star Products

The international ENERGY STAR symbol is a simple way for consumers to identify products that are among the most energy-efficient on the market.  Only manufacturers and retailers whose products meet the ENERGY STAR criteria can label their products with this symbol.  Choosing an ENERGY STAR-labelled product over a conventional model could save you hundreds of dollars in energy costs.

The use of energy-efficient products can also help save the environment.  In many parts of Canada, fossil fuels are often burned to produce electricity.  The burning of fossil fuels is a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - a leading cause of climate change - and other pollutants that contribute to urban smog and acid rain.  When you use less energy by selecting energy-efficient products, less electricity needs to be produced.  Thus you are reducing GHG emissions and promoting cleaner air as well.   Home heating equipment such as furnaces or water heaters that burn fossil fuels

directly will also produce less GHG emissions and other pollutants when they are more energy efficient, making for a cleaner, greener community.  ENERGY STAR Contact Information:  Natural Resources Canada, Office of Energy Efficiency, 1 Observatory Crescent, Building #1, Ottawa, ON  K1A 0E4 (613) 947-5286(Fax)
