Queen’s University and the Royal Military College Receive funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)

Each year thousands of professors from universities across Canada apply to NSERC for research and equipment grants. These funds provide the core support for research in such fields as chemistry, mathematics, ecology, computer science and materials engineering. The professors dedicate a large portion of their grant funds to training the next generation of Canadian undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers.

In May, 2001 NSERC announced that Queen’s University would receive $3,868,833 and that the Royal Military College would receive $444,009.

ENHANCED PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED FOR FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE

Ottawa—The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced an enhanced public awareness campaign for the prevention of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Canada, featuring public service announcements, a new brochure and prominent signage at major Canadian airports.

The enhanced public awareness campaign is part of the Government of Canada’s ongoing efforts to prevent FMD from entering the country. The campaign will include the following:

The CFIA has produced 30-second and 60-second public service announcements that will air on major television networks.

A 60-second infomercial video will be shown on-board many international airline flights.

A brochure has been produced educating travellers and the public on the prevention of FMD.

Large posters informing passengers of the risk of FMD will be displayed prominently at Canadian international airports.

The enhanced elements of the campaign complement steps already taken to inform people about FMD, including advertisements in major newspapers, magazines and agricultural publications, the distribution of educational information, handout advisories at airports, fact sheets for industry association events, information sessions for agricultural producers and rural communities and continual updates on the CFIA website (www.inspection.gc.ca).
