First Capital DayHOME

A Message from Peter Milliken, M.P. Kingston and the Islands

Dear friends,

I am very happy to join with you in recognizing First Capital Day, June 15. This date is an excellent opportunity for us to celebrate with friends and family, and enjoy the festivities that the First Capital Committee has organized for us.

This day is also central to our identity as citizens of Kingston and of Canada, as on this date, Lord Sydenham opened the first Parliament of the United Provinces of Canada here in Kingston. This was a defining point in both our city’s and our nation’s history.

I hope that this publication will provide you with some useful information about Kingston’s role in hosting this unique and significant event.

Once more, I wish to extend my congratulations to Mr. Ian Milne and Dr. Margaret Angus, the founders of First Capital Day, who continue to work tirelessly to ensure that this date receives the recognition it deserves.

Yours truly,

Peter Milliken
