Hon. Peter Milliken, 
M.P. Kingston and the Islands                
Speaker of the House of Commons

Born Nov. 12, 1946 in Kingston, Ont.peter.gif (30453 bytes)
Son of John Andrew and Catherine Margaret Milliken.

Educated at Queen's University, Oxford University and Dalhousie University.  A lawyer.

Political Career: First elected to the House of Commons in the 1988 general election.  

Re-elected in the 1993 general election.   Parliamentary Secretary to the Government House Leader, December 6, 1993 until February 23, 1996. Elected Deputy Chairman of Committees of the Whole House October 1996 to November 1997. 
Re-elected
in the 1997 general election, he was elected Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the Committees of the Whole House.  Member of the Board of Internal Economy.  
Re-elected
in the 2000 general election, he was elected Speaker on January 2 9, 2001. Chair of the Board of Internal Economy. 
Re-elected
in the 2004 General Election, and was acclaimed Speaker of the House of Commons on October 4, 2004.
Re-elected
in the 2006 general election.
Re-elected Speaker of the House of Commons on April 3, 2006.

Elected as Councilor; Canadian N.A.T.O. Parliamentary Association, April 24, 1996. Participated in the Parliamentary, Business and Labour Trust. President Kingston and the Islands Liberal Association, 1985-87.

Private Career: Lawyer and partner, Cunningham, Swan, Carty, Little and Bonham, 1973 until 1989 before his election to Parliament.

Party: Liberal.
